San Diego Union Tribune wasted no time to make fun of Manti' Teo with this cartoon. Fair or Foul?

Lakers Should Do Themselves A Flavor And NOT Re-Sign Dwight Howard!

When you think of great and dominant centers in the history of the NBA Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and David Robinson may come to mind but not Dwight Howard.

Howard is in 8th season in the NBA and pretty much the same player he was eight years he is a great rebounder and great defensive arguably the best in the NBA. Dwight is 27 years old and apparently in his prime but still has the same post game or lack there of that he had when enter the NBA. Now he shows some different post move every now and then but nothing constant. Howard will never be that center that you can threw the ball into the post and say ok go get 25-30 points and that type of center doesn't exist in the NBA anymore.

You may thinking will why many people ans so called experts called Howard the best bigman in the game? Well that's just by default because there are very few true centers in the NBA and as far as best center in the NBA goes Brook Lopez and Marc Gasol are not too far behind.

When Kobe Bryant went down before the playoffs started that gave Howard somewhat of a test or a tryout. Can Howard step up in the spotlight of Los Angeles put the Lakers on his back, carrying the team, and be the constant dominant force that everyone in L.A. was hopefully for.

Throughout the first round against the Spurs, Howard displayed flashes of dominance but once again he wasn't constant with his play when he gets frustrated his play goes down and body language gets poor evident when Howard got ejected Game 4.

And the Lakers are going to sign this guy for five years $120 million.

If Howard would have shown up throughout the whole series against the Spurs like Stephen Curry has been killing the Nuggets when David Lee went down and showed that he could be the man and carry a franchise in L.A. not necessarily win but be a force maybe he would be wroth $120 million well not $120 million but able to say he's the man for the next five to six years.

Howard isn't a superstar he is a star that needs the right pieces around him to be successful.

Howard should with Houston it would be like being Orlando again. Not a major city, they have shooter there and most importantly have an rising star in James Harden which would take a lot about pressure on Howard. Then Howard could focus on what he does best rebounding and defense.  Howard wants to be big fish in a little pond with no pressure that just wants to be liked.

Howard is one most physical presents in NBA history but he just doesn't have that bigman mindset and mentality to dominant both ends of the court to be a true franchise center.

NBA veteran Jason Collins tells SI he is gay

"I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport," Collins says."But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."

That what 34 year old Jason Collins told Sports Illustrated in an article which Collins also co-wrote becoming the first openly gay male athlete in the four major American sports.

Collins isn't a star by any means but he will set screens, grab rebounds, block a shots, protects the paint, plays team defense, and even play the role of enforcer at times a good role player. Collins will be a free agent this summer after spending the 2012-13 season with Boston and Washington. He appeared in 32 games for the Celtics and six for the Wizards averaging 1.1 points and 1.6 rebounds.

"We are extremely proud of Jason and support his decision to live his life proudly and openly," said Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld in a statement Monday. "He has been a leader on and off the court and an outstanding teammate throughout his NBA career. Those qualities will continue to serve him both as a player and as a positive role model for others of all sexual orientation."

In the article, Collins said he dated women and was even engaged at one point. He thought he had to live a certain way, but contemplated coming out during the 2011 NBA player lockout before finally making the decision at this time.

"The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect," Collins said in the SI story. "Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully?"

Collins said he told a small group of family and friends including his twin brother, Jarron, last summer.

The NBA released a statement after the article was published.

"As (incoming NBA commissioner) Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family," said NBA commissioner David Stern. "Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue."

Sports has that power take some of the problems that society has and make it somewhat easier to accept. Like when people when Jackie Robinson came to the major leagues at first it was hard on him but eventually the players and fans accept Robinson as a baseball player and at the time help with the discrimination.

Collins in a sense is somewhat of a Jackie Robinson of today and hopefully Collins will have a the same impact that Robinson did. Robinson took that first step and players followed now that Collins has walked through that door and out the closest but he left that door open open for more athletes to take that step too. Gay or not you have respect him stepping up and coming out now other gay athletes have someone to look up to.

Jason Collins is somewhat of a modern day Jackie Robinson.

And the day after he came out to SI, Collins reported that he slept well. When he woke, the sky hadn't fallen in. And damn if it wasn't blue.

NBA Playoff Preview: Eastern Conference

Now lets move to the Eastern Conference which is nothing like the Western Conference there the Heat and that's basically it maybe the Knicks. So this Eastern Conference preview is going to be short and sweet so lets start with the defending champions Miami Heat.

(1) Heat vs. (8) Bucks
Brandon Jennings said he wanted to play the Heat in the playoffs because they "match up well." Well Jennings got his wish glad he didn't wish a win in the playoff because the Heat will roll over the Bucks period.

Triple Double's prediction: No prediction needed everyone knows what going to happen here.

(2) Knicks vs. (7) Celtics
This maybe the most interesting series in the Eastern Conference Knicks vs. Celtics. This rivalry got a little spicier when Kevin Garnett and Carmelo Anthony got into it after Garnett got under Anthony's skin by talking trash about his wife. Can the Knicks continue their hot three shooting point? Cam Anthony continue his MVP like season in the playoffs and lead the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Finals. And don't let the seven seed for the Celtics fool you they still got Pierce, Garnett, and most importantly Doc plus if Terry return to the old Terry watch out this going to a tough physical series either way.

 Triple Double's prediction: 4-3 Knicks

(3) Pacers vs. (6) Hawks
This maybe the most boring NBA playoff series known to man so not going to spend too much time on it.
Pacers are the more physical then the Hawks well they are better team period. The Hawks always seem to make the playoffs but never past the first round ever year to point where you just forget about them.

Triple Double's prediction: 4-1 Pacers

(4) Nets vs. (5) Bulls
With no Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah doubtful for Game 1 and not going to be 100% when he comes back some may think the Nets may take this series. But not so fast the Bull end the Heat 27 game winning streak and the Knicks hot winning streak and without Rose or Noah but they still have Deng and Robinson most importantly Tom Thibodeau who always has his teams ready to play. If Noah does come back Brook Lopez and Joakim Noah will be the matchup to watch. The X-factor for the Bulls will be the streaky Nate Robinson who can put up 25 any given night. As for the Nets, Reggie Evans is the X -factor will he crash and get points off the offensive boards. And don't forget about the backcourt for the Nets Williams and Johnson going against Tom Thibodeau's tough defense should be interesting.

Triple Double's prediction: 4-2 Bulls

Triple Double's prediction Eastern Conference Final: Heat vs. Knicks

NBA Playoffs Preview : Western Conference

After an interesting season with the Heat's 27 game winning streak to Kobe Bryant torn Achilles its that time of the year again its time for the NBA playoffs. So lets preview the NBA playoffs starting with the Western conference which is like an March Madness bracket wide open this year.

(1)Thunder vs. (8)Rockets
Its fun how things workout sometimes as James Harden returns to Oklahoma City with his own team for the first round. Although Harden played good throughout most the playoffs last year everyone remember his performance in the Finals lets see if he can carry his team in the playoffs.   Look for this series to very fast pace and up and down. The key matchup is going to the point guards Westbrook vs Lin can Jeremy Lin keep Westbrook in front of him on the defensive end. Its going to be interesting to see to going the aggressor between Durant and Westbrook. And don't forget about Kevin Martin!

Triple Double's prediction: 4-2 Thunder

(2) San Antonio vs. (7) L.A. Lakers
It may not be the season the Lakers were hoping for but at least they made the playoffs right? With Kobe Bryant out and Steve Nash unlikely, Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard have to play like they did the last two games of the regular season especially Dwight Howard. The key matchup in this series with Tony Parker not being 100% now focus on the big men Duncan vs Howard. But the key player for the Lakers is going to be Gasol can the Lakers play their offense through him. When its all said and done Greg Popovich is going to out coach Mike D'Antoni which isn't hard to do and the Spurs is be too deep for the Lakers. Steve Blake may get hot one game but Duncan and Ginobili will be consistent throughout this series.

Triple Double's prediction: 4-1 Spurs

(3) Nuggets vs. (6) Warriors
If you like offense and no defense fast pace entertaining basketball with this is the series for you every game should be in the scored in the 120's. The key matchup for this series is the point guards Stephen Curry and Ty Lawson its going to be fun to watch. Kenneth Faried is hopeful to be ready by Game 1 and he is the X-factor for Nuggets with his rebounding and hustle. For the Warriors, Clay Thompson is their X-Factor with his outside shooting. But the Nuggets have the biggest advantage their home court one of the best in the NBA with their fans and the attitude.

Triple Double's prediction: 4-3 Nuggets

(4) Clippers vs. (5) Grizzles
If you can't wait for the Nuggets and Warriors series then Clippers and Grizzles series probably isn't for you. Sorry Clippers' fans "Lob City" will not be en affect in this series because we all know that the pace slows down in the playoffs especially with a team like the Grizzles the best defense in the NBA. The key matchup  is going to Mike Conley and Chris Paul for this series how Conley guards Paul will be huge Conley is a great defender always near the top of the league in steals. Grizzles will beat them up inside and on the defensive end with Mac Gasol but when you got Chris Paul you always have a chance to win as we saw last year. This is going to be another seven games grit and grind  series like last year.

Triple Double's prediction: 4-3 Grizzles

Triple Double's prediction Western Conference Finals: Grizzles vs Spurs

K-State's Bill Snyder Speaking The True!!

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said college athletics is “in a bad place right now”. The remarks were made on a Kansas City-based sports radio station on Wednesday morning.

“College athletics, particularly football, has changed dramatically throughout my career,” Snyder said on 610 Sports Radio KCSP. “I think it's in a bad place right now. It's in a bad place for a variety of reasons. We've allowed it to become money driven. We've allowed it to become TV driven. We've allowed athletic programs or football programs to mean more to a university than what the university is really supposed to be all about.”

“The last I heard, we were educational institutions,” Snyder said. “Certainly there is an education that takes place in football, and I understand all the parameters. But it's not driven by values; it's driven by dollars and cents.”

Asked by a host if the current state of college athletics makes Snyder consider if he wants “to be in it much longer,” the coach replied: “You're not too far away. You're absolutely right.”

In January, the 73-year-old coach Snyder signed a new five-year contract worth $14.75 million. But coach knows that part of the problem.“I can only speak personally,” Snyder said. “I'm grossly overpaid for what I do. That's part of what creates the issue.” And he it the nail on the head.

Coach Snyder continued by saying, “We didn't grow up with it being the way it is right now,” Snyder said during the interview, referring to college athletics as a whole. “Maybe we're just hard-pressed to accept change. We've been moving in a wrong direction, and I hope somebody can help put the brakes on at some point in time.”

When the BCS makes a deal with ESPN for 500 million dollars and not just head coaches but assistant coaches like Kirby Smart making an over $1 million dollars yet these college athletes are busting their butts but aren't getting paid something is wrong.

Brandon O'Brien, an NFL hopeful, decided to re-enlist in the Marines at the age of 30 after the Boston Marathon bombing. Dwight Howard To Stay Or To Go?

On Monday night, the Lakers played and won their first game without Kobe Bryant in which Dwight Howard put up some big numbers 26 points and 17 rebounds. Now the Lakers control their fate and with a win against the Rockets they're in the playoffs. But lets look past the playoffs because without Kobe Bryant lets face it the Lakers aren't going nowhere and now look towards the off season.

When the Magic traded Howard to the Lakers he had one year left one his contract which means basically the Lakers got him for a one year rental if he didn't sign a long term. Howard hasn't sign a long term deal yet but the Lakers are confident that Dwight Howard will return to next season. How confident should they be?

With Dwight Howard, we have learn always expect the unexpected the Magic can tells us that. When Howard was in Orlando at first wanted a trade then he wanted to stay. Next, he wanted coach Stan Van Gundy fired and he got his wish people around Orlando assumed that was enough for Howard to stay but once again he changed mind and requested to be traded.

Now that Kobe Bryant has a real serious injury and it looks like next season maybe cut short plus and his career in question everyone is turning their attention to Dwight Howard to become to man in Los Angeles. But being the man in L.A. is different than everywhere else its a different type of pressure on and off the court. Don't know if Howard is ready for that pressure of being a big man in L.A. it maybe too much for him when he looks up in the raptors and sees just not all the championship banners but all the hall fame big men that played in that same uniform.

Wouldn't be surprised if Dwight Howard pulls the same mess that he pulled in a Orlando in L.A. Just thinking about it Kobe is out which means Howard becomes the focus but Mike D'Antoni and style of play doesn't play through the post which Dwight Howard wants his touches in the post and we saw in New York Mike D'Antoni doesn't change his style according to his roster. Just knowing that little bit Howard may go to management and say he will stay just get rid of D'Antioni. Then once they fired him Howard will find the pressure in L.A too much and sign with another team. They say history repeats itself it may happen in L.A.

If Dwight Howard doesn't sign with the Lakers look for him to sign with the Houston Rockets. They already got a star there in James Harden so it wouldn't be that too much pressure on Howard plus coach Kevin McHale who was a one the greatest big men in the NBA and there would be more shooters around Dwight just what he wanted the ideal situation. Dwight wants to be a big fish in a little pond.

Johnny Football going end tongue deep with some girl at a bar. Looks like being the Heisman Trophy winner has its benefits!

Kobe Bryant has fully ruptured Achilles tendon recovery time 6 to 9 months. Kobe Bryant in his own words from Facebook:

"This is such BS! All the training and sacrifice just flew out the window with one step that I've done millions of times! The frustration is unbearable. The anger is rage. Why the hell did this happen ?!? Makes no damn sense. Now I'm supposed to come back from this and be the same player Or better at 35?!? How in the world am I supposed to do that??
I have NO CLUE. Do I have the consistent will to overcome this thing? Maybe I should break out the rocking chair and reminisce on the career that
was. Maybe this is how my book
ends. Maybe Father Time has defeated me...Then again maybe not! It's 3:30am, my foot feels like dead weight, my head is spinning from the pain meds and I'm wide awake. Forgive my Venting but what's the purpose of social media if I won't bring it to you Real No Image?? Feels good to vent, let it out. To feel as if THIS is the WORST thing EVER! Because After ALL the venting, a real perspective sets in. There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever.
One day, the beginning of a new career journey will commence. Today is NOT that day.
"If you see me in a fight with a bear, prey for the bear". Ive always loved that quote. Thats "mamba mentality" we don't quit, we don't cower, we don't run. We endure and conquer.
I know it's a long post but I'm Facebook Venting LOL. Maybe now I can actually get some sleep and be excited for surgery tomorrow. First step of a new challenge.
Guess I will be Coach Vino the rest of this season. I have faith in my teammates. They will come thru.
Thank you for all your prayers and support. Much Love Always.
Mamba Out."

Why Is The Number Of African Americans In Today's Baseball Decreasing?

So the movie 42: The Jackie Robinson Story came out this weekend and the the question may come up why is the number of African Americans in today's baseball decreasing? In 1970's, 27 percent of players in the Major League Baseball were African American now that number as drop to 8.5 percent. So why the decrease you ask well there some reasons why and here they are.

One reason is a big time athlete in basketball or football, which most African Americans are playing, then they aren't just playing the regular season. They are being inviting to all these camps sponsored by these big time shoe companies like Nike and Adidas looking for the next big star in basketball and football. When are these camps held mostly during summer baseball season and course the athletes are going to go because everyone is watching college and pro scouts, coaches, and the shoe companies.

Another reason is the AAU, American Athletic Union, because with the AAU especially with basketball players play year round starting at an early age so they develop the interest in baseball. Granted the AAU does have baseball leagues but lets be honest there's not many young Africans American that are seriously interested in baseball as their sports of choice.

With that being said young African American just aren't interested baseball like they are in football and basketball. With football and especially basketball you may have a faster track to success than baseball and baseball doesn't really have an African American superstar that can be on the same level as LeBron or RGII.  When get draft into the NBA or the NFL you go straight to that league unlike baseball you have to work your way up through the farm system.

Bud Selig, the commissioner of MLB, and Major League Baseball has tried to introduce baseball into urban areas, creating the RBI program (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) in 1989. Be honestly its not baseball's fault for the decrease of African Americans in baseball its just everything else around baseball. But Bud Selig seems determine to bring the number of African Americans up in the baseball and with the growing concern with concussions and head injures in football maybe more African American parents will push their kids towards baseball more only time will tell.

Should College Athletes Get Paid?

People use to ask me around the end of the college football season or the end of the college basketball season should college athletes get paid? And I use to say no way they already get tuition, room, board, and books for free isn't that enough on top that they get free food most of the time and get to play the sport they love while some these students with full academic scholarship still have to pay for room and board. Students that are inspiring to be doctor or lawyer they can't even afford to go law school or medical school without building a load of debt along the way. So why should college athletes get paid? Well let me tell you.

It's simple when the NCAA makes a deal with CBS/Tuner Sports for March Madness between 2011 to 2024 for 10.8 billion dollars, not million, billion dollars for only three weekend out the year. This doesn't include what each school makes during March Madness and whole the college basketball season. On top of that the BCS made a four year deal with ESPN wroth 500 million dollars once again that doesn't include what each school makes the whole football season. So combined those two deal which would be around 11.3 billion dollars that could help out with the national debt. Why not take off 1.3 billion dollars off the top and pay these athletes that are bring in all the money.

Some would say how would you determine which sports gets paid? Easy, obviously basketball and football would make the most money then you would have your second tear sports like baseball, lacrosse, volleyball, field hockey etc. that would get least money. Now if you are a basketball player at Duke or a football player at Alabama you would be making more money than anyone else at your school. Its simple which every sports team brings in the most money to that school that team is going to be making more money. Now some  say that may not be fair well that capitalism for you.

What's not fair is these college coaches making millions of dollars while its the players out there busting thier butts for their school and coach but yet not seeing a dime. Taking that 1.3 billion from the NCAA, and remember not from the schools, would be the easiest situation but the NCAA is way to greedy for that. In my eyes the NCAA and these college are using these athletes like cattle using them for billions and billions dollars to fund everything including their own pockets.

Three Year Rule For The NBA?

Every year at the after the college basketball season there are always a hand full of players that declare for the NBA draft that have no busy in the NBA in that point in time in their careers. Many are underclassmen that just aren't ready for the NBA game mentally or physically or both which in the result shows a lot of promising players just jumping to the NBA then just disappearing over a few short years. How can the NBA change this? Easy just change the rule that will help the NBA as well as college basketball.

Currently the rule is that player as to be 19 years old and a year out of high school before declaring for the NBA Draft. David Stern has said that he would like to see one more year added to that rule which would be okay but they should go one step whether than that. The rule should be players can come straight out of high school but if they do decide to they have to go straight to the D League and if they decide to go to college they have to stay for at least three years.

That rule would help both the NBA and college basketball and here's why. For the NBA, if some young high school phenom comes out of high school turns pro and the team feels like he can't contribute right away but has unlimited potential. Then that team would start him out in the D League for the first couple of years. It is called the Developmental League for a reason and then like baseball they would be called up when ready or needed. This will be force the NBA to use the D League more like the farm system in baseball.

As for college basketball this rule would put an end to the "one and done" which is just ruining college basketball and let's face it the only ones who like the "one and done" are Kentucky fans. It would bring back college superstars for more than one season and that's something college basketball desperately needs right now a face of college basketball.

Some people would ask what if a player is not a phenom and he's just not made for college? Well that player could take the same route Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks took. After high school, Jennings went oversea for a season then enter the NBA draft granted other players may have to stay longer but its another option and plus they would get paid. The NBA has to do something though both the NBA and college basketball are being ruined in certain ways just from one rule.
